Dr. Eugene Burgess was born in the small town of Hemingway, South Carolina which is located in Williamsburg County. He is the son of the late Reverend Roosevelt and Emmie Eaddy Burgess and is the eighth child of sixteen siblings. He is the father of three sons and two daughters and has been blessed with fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
During his childhood years, he attended Cooper Rural School in Hemingway. This was not an easy task for him because he had to walk to school for nine years of his life. He later continued his education and received his high school diploma from the American Correspondence School of Chicago, IL. He then furthered his education in the gospel of Jesus Christ and attended Morris College School of Religion. Dr. Burgess received his BA degree in theology from the Christian Outreach Bible Institute and a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Greater Hope Christian College.
He is past moderator of the Williamsburg Missionary Educational Union and Sunday School, and past president of the Williamsburg County Association Executive Board. He currently serves as Project Spirit Mentor (Lake City, SC), chaplain for the Nesmith and Pinckney Funeral Home, and is a member of Good Hope Lodge #376 (having formerly served as Master).
Dr. Burgess is a member of St. James Baptist Church. He was licensed to preach in 1970 and was ordained in the ministry in 1973. He presently serves as the pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church (1975) of Scranton, SC and St. John Baptist Church (1988) of Lake City, SC.
He still resides in Williamsburg County (Kingstree, SC) where he continues to be a great asset to his community, family and friends.
